Kwasi Appiah debt: It’s unfortunate the matter has gone public in that manner – GFA Prez

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku says it is unfortunate that attempts by former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah to receive his unpaid entitlements have been dragged into the public space.

Early this month, Appiah publicly expressed discontent about the fact that he is still owed for services rendered before leaving the senior national team job at the end of his contract on December 31, 2019.

Kwasi Appiah, who was on a $35,000 salary, is demanding for his five months arrears and a winning bonus of $10,000, totalling $185,000.

The pained coach, who felt disrespected by the GFA’s no response to two letters over the debt sent through his lawyers, hinted in an interview with Starr FM his next move in retrieving the money to be a Fifa action.

The subject has since been raging in the Ghanaian media space with an aide to Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah coming out to chastise the coach as being ungrateful over the manner he and his allies were dragging the matter in public.

Commenting on the subject, GFA President Kurt Okraku told GhanaWeb TV: “It’s most unfortunate. Honestly speaking, I would not want the FA or for that matter the government to come into the public space in that manner.”

“Indeed, we initiated the processes; [to get him paid]. Everybody knows – including Kwasi Appiah – the processes that are involved.

“He knows the FA engaged him but the FA doesn’t pay his salaries. The Ministry of Youth and Sports is responsible for the payment of salaries of all of our national team coaches and they do it via the sponsorship from GNPC so it’s a bit of like a triangle. There are processes one has to go through; at times it delays and at times it does end quickly.

“It’s unfortunate he went public, but it’s his singular prerogative and let me say that it’s not only Kwasi Appiah who is owed. Stephen Appiah is owed; Richard Olele Kingston is owed too and even Avram Grant was owed but it’s been cleared, “he added.

Last week, the Sports Miniter’s aide revealed efforts have been made to settle Kwasi Appiah in the shortest possible time through sponsors GNPC.
