Herve Renard relishes return to Black Stars as head coach

Two-time Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach, Herve Renard has revealed rejoining the Black Stars of Ghana in the near future remains a good option for him.

The former Morroco tactician, who enjoyed his first stint on the African continent as a physical trainer for the senior national team under veteran gaffer Claude Le Roy during the 2008 Afcon, is relishing a return as the head of the coaching staff.

The Afcon trophy has eluded Ghana since their success at the 1982 finals. That triumph was Ghana’s fourth crown.

“I have a new challenge with Saudi Arabia now and that’s my focus but of course, I will come back to Africa one day to win something with a country, one that hasn’t won the Afcon for a very long time.

“Of course, coming back to coach Ghana will be a fantastic challenge but no one knows tomorrow.

“Ghana was on top but now a little bit down. The potential is still the same.

“One day, it will be your management and your government that decides that we want to bring this man or maybe we don’t want him because we don’t like him.

“How can you refuse to be interested in a team that always gets close and not win? So, this will be a fantastic challenge,” Renard told TV3’s Juliet Bawuah in an interview.

The Black Stars have been close to the title thrice – losing the finals of 1992, 2010, and 2015 tournaments.

Renard has earned prominence on the African continent, having led Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire to glory at the elite championship, in 2012 and 2015, respectively.

A return to the Black Stars and a win will make him the first coach to win the continental piece with three different nations.
