French coach Herve Renard says his 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) triumph with Cote d’Ivoire was achieved via an amount of luck.
The Elephants beat Ghana 9-8 on penalty shootout despite missing their first two kicks after a barren 120 minutes at the Estadio de Bata, Equatorial Guinea.
“The Afcon 2015 final between Ivory Coast and Ghana, I had never watched that game since.
“I only got to watch the game some three weeks ago and I think Ghana was the better side.
“Ghana played better and I think we (Cote d’Ivoire) were a bit lucky,” Renard told TV3’s Juliet Bawuah in a live video chat via Twitter.
After leaving the Ivory Coast in May 2015, Herve joined French Ligue 1 side Lille. But a poor run in 13 games caused his sack.
Later on, the top gaffer joined Morroco, qualifying the Atlas Lions to the Russia-hosted 2018 Fifa World Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
But with the North Africans, glory eluded him via a 4-1 penalties defeat to Benin in the Round of 16.
Herve Renard now manages the Saudi Arabia national team.
