COVID-19: ‘AshantiGold players, technical team accept to take 20% pay-cut’

AshantiGold assistant coach, Thomas Duah has revealed that players and technical team of the club have agreed to reduce their pay by 20%.

In recent weeks, some Ghanaian clubs have been engaging their playing body to reduce their remuneration by a percentage due to the huge financial burdens that have saddled them amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

And the Miners have become the first club in the Ghana Premier League to reach a stance on slashing their salaries, according to the trainer following consultations with the playing body.

Speaking to Kumasi FM on the implementation of pay-cuts locally, coach Duah said: “We all know the situation at hand. Because of this COVID-19, the league has been suspended and there’s no football… We are unaware of when this disease is ending to make way for the return of football.

“Generally, it [pay-cut] is something that cannot be forced on the players. If the management of the clubs are able to conclude mutually, that’s fine.”

“But with AshantiGold players and technical team, we have accepted a 20% pay-cut. We have to be lenient and help the club president [Dr Kwaku Frimpong] in this difficult time.

“I have spoken to the leadership of the playing body and they have accepted it. It is something that is not normal, players play at least eight matches in a month at times but salaries are not increased. We are only considering them in these difficult times,” he revealed.
