Clubs will crumble financially if league is played behind closed doors – Alhaji Raji

Former Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Alhaji Ali Raji admits that clubs will crumble financially if games are played behind closed doors.

The Ghana Football Association is planning for Premier League games to be played behind closed doors when government lifts the ban on social gatherings following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The proposal has raffled the feathers of former GHALCA boss who believes the idea will sink the clubs financially.

“The only option we have is to play games behind closed doors.

“But how can these clubs survive with supporters.

“How can the club foot their bills without spectators at the stadium.

“Even the big clubs, Kotoko and Hearts have come out to say that 70% of their revenue comes from gate proceeds.

“How much more the other young clubs, it is very difficult.

“I would suggest that we cancel the current season and re-strategize for next season, that is my opinion.” Alhaji Raji told Akoma FM.

The Ghana Premier League grounded to halt with few matches to end the first round.

Several countries have cancelled their championship with others like Bundesliga being one of the major leagues to resume after government eased restrictions on the lockdown.

Ghana is however divided over whether to continue or cancel the 2019/20 league season.
