2019/20 GPL: Bechem Utd hand Berekum Chelsea their first defeat

Berekum Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League is no more after they slumped to their first defeat of the season on match-day seven – a 2-1 loss at Bechem United Sunday afternoon.

The Bibires’ run this campaign has been breathtaking – with some giant-killing of Hearts, Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold on the road and not conceding until match-day six when they were held 1-1 by Aduana Stars who today beat Medeama to dethrone them from the top of the league standings.

All three goals in the first half of the tensed local derby. The visitors used to be known as Bechem Chelsea until they switched base to nearby Berekum and adopted their current name.

Charles Mensah fired the opener for the Hunters against the former occupants of the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park within two minutes of play.

But on 19 minutes, Berekum Chelsea were level. Kofi Agbesimah, the Bechem United defender, turned the ball into his own net.

Bechem United’s persistence paid off with 16-year-old poacher Prince Kwabena Adu who started the game upon return from injury, restored the advantage just within first-half additional time.

2-1 the first half and that was all to be recorded in terms of goals from the match-day seven tie in Bechem.

The defeat means Berekum Chelsea drop to second, two points behind new leaders Aduana Stars who beat Medeama 1-0 to go 16. For Bechem, they climb up to sixth position – on same points – 13 – as Medeama, AshantiGold and Asante Kotoko who lie on top by superior goal difference.
