Mambo slams AshantiGold arrogance

AshantiGold stand-in coach, Yakubu Sharrif Mambo criticized his team for Saturday’s shock 1-0 home defeat by Berekum Chelsea, saying they were too ‘arrogant’ in their approach to the match-day five encounter.

Berekum Chelsea slayed AshantiGold at Len Clay Stadium to extend their giant-killing spree and effectively ended the Miners’ unbeaten start to the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League campaign.

Expressing his disappointment with the result, Mambo sounded riled by the attitude of his charges.

“I am not happy today. We had a lot of chances to score but we failed to utilize them. Meanwhile, Berekum Chelsea got a slight opportunity and made use of it.

“The boys were not serious and they were overconfident and they believed they would just show up and win.

“I spoke to them at half time and they improved and they created chances but they could not score any of them,” the Miners’ assistant trainer said in a pitchside interview.

Mambo was quick to discard suggestions that fatigue had set in after his side had just about some 48 hours of preparation after returning from drawing 0-0 with Legon Cities in Accra on Wednesday night and may not have rested enough for the Saturday afternoon fixture.

He noted: “What we are going through is not a matter of fatigue. It is overconfidence. When we play, everyone can see that they are very durable and can last in matches and so, we cannot blame fatigue.

“We have been creating all many chances in our matches but we are not putting them away.”

AshantiGold, touted title favourites, have fired blanks in two straight games now after scoring six in their opening three matches of the season.

They are back on the road on Saturday to face Medeama SC in a match-day six tie at Akoon Community Park in Tarkwa.
