Name change: Wa All Stars now Legon Cities FC

After initially dropping a name change to Stallions FC, new owners of one-time Ghana Premier League champions Wa All Stars have backtracked on their reasons to now rechristen it Legon Cities Football Club.

Ex-Ghana defender John Paintsil, who is a co-owner, had explained in an interview with DS One Sports earlier this month (December) that they had abandoned the move to change the club’s name for ‘marketing purposes.’

He said: “In the beginning, we wanted to change the name but the name Wa All Stars is a powerful brand. The club has won the league title so marketing-wise, we have decided to keep the name Wa All Stars going forward then we see what happens in the future. So our name remains Wa All Stars.”

But on December 23, the new, who acquired Wa All Stars from former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi back in August, backtracked with another name change request to Legon Cities and have secured approval as per a GFA letter four days later.

Wa All Stars is now known as Legon Cities Football Club with its base also changed from Wa in the Upper West region to the nation’s capital Accra.

“We acknowledge receipt of a letter from Wa All Stars Football Club dated 23rd December 2019 requesting for approval for change of your club’s name from Wa All Stars Football Club to Legon Cities Football Club.

“The GFA also acknowledges receipts of documents on the change of name to Legon Cities Football Club (an incorporated company) from the Registrar General’s Department attached to your request submitted to the GFA under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992).

“Consequently, the GFA hereby approves the change of name from Wa All Stars Football Club to Legon Cities Football Club,” portions of a GFA approval letter signed by Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi read.

Legon Cities recently saw their decision to adopt the newly-built Madina Park as home grounds for the 2019/20 football season rejected by the Club Licensing Board. The club is reportedly deciding on one of the Accra Sports Stadium or Dawu Park as alternative home grounds.
