Jordan Opoku: I will never play for Kotoko again but…

Experienced midfielder Jordan Opoku says three separate spells are enough as he shuts doors on returning to Asante Kotoko as a player once more.

The former club captain first joined the Porcupines in 2006 before he first left the club five years later. He was there-signed for the 2013-2015 seasons after excelling on return to the country with Berekum Chelsea. Opoku returned again in December 2017 before he was refused a contract extension a few weeks ago.

“I was told my contract which was expiring in December would not be renewed so I’m moving on. It’s one of those things in life, you can’t stay at one place forever. No hard feelings,” the former Feyenoord academy trainee said in an interview with DS Sports One.

“Right now, I don’t harbour any wish to return to Kotoko as a player again.

“I’m a supporter of the club and can help in other ways but not as a player any more. Maybe when I retire in the future, I can help as a scout or youth team coach as I’m aiming for my badges. I can help with unearthing some talents for the club.”

Retirement brouhaha

Jordan Opoku’s latest exit from Kotoko did not come without controversy as a suggestion of a ceremonial match in his honour flared up emotions.

While being told his services were no longer needed, the Kotoko management suggested they were ready for a sendoff game to mark his dedicated service to the club.

But an unhappy Opoku says: “I’m the one to decide when to stop, not them.”

“I got angry because when you begin to tell me intentions of organizing a ceremonial game, then it means you want me to retire.

“I was even quite about everything that happened at the meeting until I heard it was already out there in the public domain. That got me angry.

“I’m not retiring yet. There are no such intentions now but maybe when the time is up, I will inform Kotoko and if they take accept to organize a testimonial for me, we will take it up.

“I have planned when I want to retire. I don’t need to be forced to so I get home regretting,” he reiterated.
