2019/20 GPL: Hearts slump to home defeat in season opener

Giants Hearts of Oak suffered an opening day defeat to Berekum Chelsea when the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League got underway on Sunday.

The Bibires secured one of their rare victories at the Accra Sports Stadium courtesy a Jonah Attuquaye solitary strike in the first half.

The goal came on 34 minutes with Attuquaye feeding on a pass through the middle from skipper Braimah Mohammed. The winger skid past the onrushing Hearts centre-back Robert Addo Sowah before letting fly a curler past goalkeeper Richmond Ayi.

Hearts, despite being the hosts, played second best to Berekum Chelsea who ensured the Phobians chased shadows for most parts of the game.

In one of their moments, Hearts thought they deserved to be awarded a penalty when striker Joseph Esso appeared to have been fouled in the box but their call fell on deaf ears.

Berekum Chelsea almost made it 2-0 afterwards when former goal king Kofi Owusu turned in the ball off a pinpoint cross from the right but he was flagged offside.

Striker Kofi Kordzi, who was introduced in the second half, came closest to an equalizer when his left-footed effort rattled the upright.

On 78 minutes, Hearts wanted a penalty for a handball in the Berekum Chelsea area but referee George Vormawoh waved away the latest appeal, much to the displeasure of the Phobian faithful.

Berekum Chelsea themselves left their hosts off the hook as they squandered lots of chances through Atuquaye and Kofi Owusu. They however kept their composure at the back to take home a deserved 1-0 victory from Accra.

Hearts next travel to the Akoon Park to face Medeama who beat Ebusua Dwarfs 3-1 away on Sunday while Berekum Chelsea welcome Liberty Professionals to the Golden City Park. Match-day two fixtures have been scheduled to come off January 3-6, 2020.
