AshantiGold got their 2019/20 Ghana Premier League (GPL) campaign underway on a fine note by sealing a 3-0 victory over Great Olympics at Len Clay Stadium on Sunday.
Olympics had opportunities to ruffle some feathers in the opening 10 minutes with the hosts having to overcome a slow start but they failed to capitalize on their early momentum.
The Miners got off their blocks and the opening goal soon came – through birthday boy Yussif Mubarick on 18 minutes.
Young forward Mark Agyekum, who was handed a rare start by stand-in coach Yakubu Sheriff Mambo, turned provider for winger Amos Addai to double the lead in the 37th minute.
Skipper Shafiu Mumuni capped the victory with a 69th-minute penalty strike after he was brought down in the box by Olympics goalkeeper Ayuba Nelson.
AshantiGold, who have now appointed Turkish Kasim Gökylidiz to replace Ricardo Da Rocha as new head coach, travel to face King Faisal in Kumasi on match-day two.
