Afcon 2021Q: Gideon Mensah gets late Black Stars call-up

Defender Gideon Mensah is the latest to receive a late call-up to the Ghana senior national team ahead of the November international break.

It is a first-time Black Stars call-up for the 21-year-old Red Bull Salzburg left-back who is currently on loan at Belgian top-flight side Zulte Waregem.

Mensah is already on his way to Ghana after featuring in his side’s defeat to RSC Anderlecht Friday night and will join coach Kwasi Appiah’s side in time for their first training session (to be held in Accra) towards the start of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.

His inclusion gives quite solves an imbalance (lack of a proper left-back) in the list of invited players by coach Appiah especially following the injury to full-back Harrison Afful.

Ghana, housed in Group C of the qualifiers with South Africa, Sao Tome and Principe as well as Sudan, will open their campaign at home on Thursday, November 14 against Bafana Bafana. The match is set for Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars are also scheduled to travel to face So Tome and Principe on November 18.

Gideon Mensah has been a regular figure in the Ghana U-23 side – Black Meteors – and was expected to be part of the team currently competing at the Olympic qualifying Afcon tournament in Egypt but his loan club refused to release him.
