Newcastle United’s Christian Atsu will miss Ghana’s opening games in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The winger, Footy-Ghana.com can confirm, has informed the Black Stars technical handlers he cannot be available for international duty during the November break.
Atsu, who cameoed in injury time of the Magpies’ Premier League 1-1 home draw with Wolves last Sunday, has been exempted from the squad for Ghana’s upcoming games against South Africa as well as São Tomé and Principe in order to attend to a niggling knee problem.
The 27-year-old’s last international involvement was curtailed by a hamstring injury – in the Black Stars’ second game against Cameroon at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
He was sorely missed by the team which ended up having a forgettable tournament as they got kicked out just after the group stage.
In their first qualifying game to the next Afcon – Cameroon 2021, Ghana will be hosting the Bafana Bafana of South Africa at Cape Coast Stadium on Thursday, November 14. Kickoff is at 19h00 GMT.
They are scheduled to play another game within three days – in a trip to Island nation São Tomé and Principe.
Ghana head coach Kwasi Appiah is expected to release his squad for the two games on October 30.
