Berekum Chelsea barred from Golden City Park pending probe

Berekum Chelsea have officially received a temporary stadium ban following Sunday’s violent incidents that preceded their Normalization Special Cup clash with Asante Kotoko at the Golden City Park.

The Ghana FA Normalization Committee for the Ghana FA, in a statement by Deputy General Secretary, Alex Asante Monday, quoted Article 15 (2) of the GFA General Regulations which borders on “safety of clubs, match officials or spectators.”

A management member of Asante Kotoko, Dr. Amo Sarpong reportedly pulled a gun and fired warning shots amidst some confusion which saw some of his colleagues suffer injuries at the match centre. Per reports, the Kotoko Policy Analyst was subsequently overpowered and assaulted by the home fans after the gunshots.

The GFA statement said the temporary ban order “is without prejudice to the determination of the case pending before the Disciplinary Committee” which “has been charged to hear the case in accordance to the GFA Regulations.”

The order which takes immediate effect means Berekum Chelsea’s outstanding home game scheduled for Wednesday, May 1 is to be played at a new venue. Obuasi has reportedly been earmarked for the game.
