Satellites’ friendly with South Africa cancelled

The Black Satellites’ friendly with their South Africa Under-20 counterparts on Monday has been called off.

The Ghana Football Association have gone mum over the test game with efforts to reach them proving futile. However, the South African FA (Safa), in a statement on its official website explains the match “has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.”

This is the second time the Ghana Under-20s have had challenges in playing a warm-up match over the last few days in Nigerien capital Niamey where they are holding their final preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to kick off this weekend.

Ghana had booked a friendly with local side Sahel FC for last Saturday but the match could not hold. Footy-Ghana.com is however informed that the game may now be honoured on Tuesday, January 29.

Coach Jimmy Cobblah’s boys, who are making a return to the U-20 Afcon after missing the last edition, have set for themselves a World Cup qualification target.

Housed in Group B, the Black Satellites will face Burkina Faso, Senegal as well as Mali and will need to be among the top two teams from host city Maradi to achieve their dream.

The top four finishers of the eight-nation Championship automatically qualify to represent Africa at the Under-20 Fifa World Cup which will take place in Poland later in the year.
