Cameroon open AWCON campaign with comeback win over Mali

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon roared back with quick-fire goals to defeat Mali 2-1 in their 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group A opener Saturday night.

An entertaining opening 45 minutes at the Accra Sports Stadium offered no goal. Fatoumata Doumbia and Fatoumata Diarra came close to scoring for the Malians. Cameroon had chances of their own, but poor finishing was their bane.

The goals would begin to flow after the break as Aissata Traore handed Les Aiglonnes the lead just inside 7 minutes of second half after an impressive buildup. Mali, from defending went on a counter attack which saw Fatoumata finding Traore with a pass from the right, and the latter brilliantly hit the ball home. 1-0.

Cameroon responded with the equalizer in the 67th minute through Meffoumetou Tcheno from a goal mouth melee.

One soon became two as Nchout Njoya scored the second goal after she lashed on a beautiful cross from Marlyse Ngo Mbeleck.

Cameroon’s Marlyse Ngo Ndoumbouk was adjudged best player of the match.

The Indomitable Lionesses join hosts Ghana, who defeated Algeria 1-0, at the summit of Group A table on three points.

Mali next take on the Black Queens at 15:30 GMT on November 20 while Cameroon face Algeria in the second game of the day.
