Wahab Ackwei: Ex-Inter Allies defender joins NY Red Bulls II

American second tier side, New York Red Bulls II, have signed Ghana defender Wahab Ackwei on a free transfer.

The 21-year-old centre-back left Ghanaian topflight side Inter Allies after completing his contract last season.

He scored three goals in 23 appearances in the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League.

He was initially linked to Hearts of Oak but his agents flatly denied the rumours in December last year.

“I’m very happy to join the New York Red Bulls,” Ackwei said to the club’s website.

“They are one of the biggest clubs in the USA and I’m filled with excitement,” he added.

“Wahab brings a unique skillset that we feel can adapt to how we play,” NYRB II head coach John Wolyniec said. “We look forward to helping him integrate within the team as he continues his development here with us.”

Wahab Ackwei will play for New York Red Bulls II in the American second tier, the United Soccer League this year.

New York Red Bulls II is an affiliate of the well-known MLS club New York Red Bulls.
