Ghalca G8: Medeama down Hearts, enter semis

Medeama SC secured an early semifinals spot Wednesday after recording an impressive 2-0 victory over Hearts of Oak in Group B of the ongoing 2018 Ghalca G8 Tournament.

The Mauve and Yellows thus made it an unblemished record of two wins in a row courtesy first half goals from strikers Kwame Boateng and Agyenim Boateng at the Cape Coast Stadium.

Agyenim was the provider of the opening goal in the 15th minute after a beautiful team-play – he ran into the box with the ball before laying it to a waiting Kwame Boateng for a simple tap-in.

Prior to the opener, Hearts came nearer to grabbing the opener but new boy Reginald Thompson saw his header strike the crossbar.

On the 22nd minute, Medeama doubled their lead after some questionable defending from Richard Akrofi allowed Agyenim Boateng to pounce on the loose ball and stab the ball past goalkeeper Ben Mensah.

Medeama continued to display some good exchanges with confidence on the ball, making things difficult for the Phobians.

Midfielder Malik Akowuah and forward Cosmos Dauda came the closest to scoring for Hearts in the first half but were both denied by pointblank saves from Medeama’s shot-stopper Yaw Ansah Fufuro.

Coach Frank Nuttall’s men dominated the scond half but failed to make the chances created count.

Medeama’s Rashid Nortey was named man-of-the-match.

The Tarkwa-based club lead Group B with six points. They face Karela United in the final group game while Hearts also take on Ebusua Dwarfs on Saturday.
