Accra Sports Stadium shutdown untrue – MoYS

The Ministry of Sports has denied reports claiming the Accra Sports Stadium has been closed down for renovations works.

The edifice is one of two venues marked for the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations later in November.

It has been well-trumpeted by the Sports Ministry that the Accra Sports Stadium will undergo a facelift before hosting the continent’s biggest women’s football competition with some trouble sections like the VIP stands already barricaded as a safety precaution.

The Accra Stadium is home to Hearts of Oak who are now joined in its usage by Inter Allies for the 2017/18 season.

With some few weeks to start the Ghana Premier League, reports emerged that the edifice has been completely shut down but the spokesperson of the Sports Ministry says such a decision is yet to be made by the contractor.

“The contractor is yet to decide on a total shutdown of the stadium. If only it will help his work, fine but for us, we can’t interfere.

“On the other hand, if his works can accommodate matches of Accra Hearts of Oak and Inter Allies on weekends solely depends on him,” Elvis Adjei Baah told Starr Sports.

The Accra Stadium has not been renovated since its reconstruction in 2007 for the hosting of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
