Injuries reason for Wakaso call-up – Appiah explains

Coach Kwasi Appiah has attributed injuries to certain players for inviting midfielder Mubarak Wakaso for Ghana’s game against Egypt this weekend.

The Deportivo Alaves midfielder has been one of the most consistent performers for Ghana in recent years. But he has been out of the national team since his last outing at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, the former Al Khartoum coach explained the unavailability of Italy-based Alfred Duncan and Afriyie Acquah as the reason for inviting Wakaso who had been a constant omission from the Ghana squad since his re-appointment Stars head coach in May.

“Wakaso plays as a defensive midfielder and, at the moment Afriyie Acquah is returning from injury and Alfred Duncan is injured, so automatically I only have Attamah Larweh.

“I need to bring someone who I know already who can play that role,” Coach Appiah stated.

The ex-footballer is on a team-building mission to conquer Africa in 2019 and has already sounded out his intention to give new players the chance to stake a claim for a place in his side.

Ghana will host Egypt in their final match of the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers at Cape Coast on Sunday. The Pharaohs have already qualified for the tournament in Russia.
