Edwin Gyimah only “keeping fit” at Bidvest Wits – Gavin Hunt

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Edwin Gyimah is currently training at Absa Premiership champions Bidvest Wits as he looks to keep fit with the help of Gavin Hunt.

The Ghanaian hardman was spotted at Sturrock Park on Thursday morning, despite being contracted to Swedish second division side Helsingborgs.

Wits are currently going through an injury crisis with numerous key players having missed out in recent weeks, particularly in defense and midfield.

However, The Clever Boys are unlikely to sign the 26-year-old former Bucs and SuperSport United man, with Hunt confirming he is merely maintaining his fitness, with the Swedish leagues currently in recess.

“He’s come back to train. He’s still under contract in Sweden so he’s asked me if he could come and train, so we’ll take it from there,” said Hunt.

A few weeks ago, ex-Mamelodi Sundowns and University of Pretoria striker Mame Niang was also training under Hunt, who admits to having a soft spot for his former players.

“It’s all the old players [I coached], it’s amazing they don’t go back to the clubs where they last played. Niang was here as well, we’ve had many, many,” he added.

“But Gyimah’s just asked to come and train, because he’s still contracted to his Swedish club and they’re in off-season now, so I said it’s fine.”

Gyimah left Pirates in March this year after being involved in a heated exchange with then-coach Muhsin Ertugral in September last year, prior to the Turkish coach’s abrupt resignation less than two months later.

Since moving to Scandinavia, the Black Stars international managed 25 starts in the league and cup this year, as Helsingborgs ended seventh on the Superettan log.
