2016/17 GPL: GFA Ex-Co member casts doubts over Dec. 18 start

The December 18 start date for the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League will not happen, a Ghana FA Executive Committee member has indicated.

Mr. Eddie Doku, who also doubles as the Greater Accra Regional FA Chairman confirmed this after the Ghana FA Executive Committee met to deliberate on a number of matters Monday.

“The Ghana league cannot start on the 18th December, 2016,” he told Kumasi-based Adehyeɛ FM.

The PLB, last month released a statement confirming the date to the start of the 2016/2017 season indicating that it will be preceded with the season opening Super Cup between league winners, Wa All Stars and FA Cup winners Bechem United.

But just like the past two seasons, the commencement of the league has always come with uncertainties around it due to various legal issues which had to be dealt with by the Ghana Football Association disciplinary committee.

The start of the 2016/17 campaign comes with no difference as there are still pending issues from the 2015/16 season and even the preceding one yet to be decided by the Ghana FA adjudicating bodies.

Mr. Eddie Doku however confirmed that “there will be a gala and super cup before the league starts as it’s in the Star Times sponsorship deal”.
