Arhinful laments Ayew’s long sideline

Former Ghana striker Augustine Arhinful has described Andre Ayew’s recent injury as a “big blow” to the nation.

Ayew suffered a thigh strain on his West Ham debut on Monday following a £20.5 million move from Swansea City, lasting for 35 minutes of the game.

The 26-year-old is expected to be out for up to four months, and, thus, expected to miss the 2017 Afcon qualifier against Rwanda next month, in addition to 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying games with Uganda and Egypt this year.

“It is sad that we are going to miss him but there is nothing we can do about it,” Arhinful told Class FM.

“We have other good players who will replace him.

“Our captain Asamoah Gyan has been injured for sometime and has not played a couple of matches for the Black Stars, but the team has always been successful without him.

“I believe Asamoah will be ready to replace the void Dede’s injury is going to create.”

Andre Ayew scored 12 goals for Swansea last season before joining West Ham.
