Board Member of Accra Hearts of Oak, Frank Nelson has embraced the decision by GHALCA to pick Hearts and Kotoko for this year’s President Cup.
Nelson has given a thumps-up to the organizers and added that it is a good decision to engage the two glamorous clubs in the country.
The Phobians have won the last two editions of the cup, beating Medeama and Kotoko respectively and possibly have the chance to repeat the dose on their bitterest rivals at the Accra Stadium come July 1.
This is an opportunity for the Phobians to avenge the painful loss suffered at the hands of the Porcupine Warriors in the league while Kotoko also stand a chance of winning the trophy for the first time in three years.
“I think it is something that is very good for Ghana football because having Accra Hearts of Oak and Kotoko in such situation brings a lot of excitement into the football fraternity,” Mr. Nelson told Kumasi-based Fox FM.
“If Kotoko and Hearts have been chosen to play the President Cup, I think it’s a welcome idea. Hearts is ever ready and sure Kotoko is also ready too. At the end of the day, it is a promotion, an exercise, and an entertainment [avenue]. It’s also a way of lifting up our football, so I think it’s a good decision to choose both Kotoko and Hearts.
“It’s good news for Ghana football, supporters and everyone. The day is also a national holiday too so whoever wants entertainment, it’s refreshing news for him.
“It will not be played as a revenge match. It will be played normally as in the first match [first round in the league] – same degree of seriousness. For me, I feel it is an opportunity to sell the football for people to get themselves involved in the activities of football instead of sitting home or going to the beach to get drunk. Accra Hearts of Oak and Kotoko at all time is a welcome encounter.”
The President Cup is played every year to honour the sitting President on the 1st of July, the day Ghana was declared a republic state in 1960.
