MTN FA Cup: WAFA bundled out as Okwahu makes semi-final berth

Okwahu United have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2016 MTN FA Cup after piping premiership side WAFA 1-0 in extra-time on Sunday.

WAFA had not conceded a goal in the competition prior to this match and were hoping to advance to the next stage with their flawless performances. The Academy Boys paraded a strong starting 11.

In the first department of the game, Okwahu, with home supporters rallying behind them, played very well with few goal-line melee while WAFA comfortably stayed back and enjoyed passing the ball around.

It turned into a midfield battle from the 30th minute mark with both teams staying resolute at the back lines. No side was able to break the deadlock with the first half ending goalless.

The same end-to-end stuff was carried onto the second half, as both teams went close to opening the scoring in a spate of two minutes after recess. WAFA matched the home side boot-for-boot with an improved play, surging forward much more in the second half.

In a quick turnaround, goalkeeper Theophilus Jackson made splendid save to keep the away side in the game as Okwahu responded in a similar manner on the 70th minute. Five minutes to end the game, the Soccer Mountaineers wasted an effort to take a last minute lead. After full time, the match ended with no side breaking the duck. The game headed straight into extra time.

In the second half of extra time, Okwahu United finally broke the deadlock through Kwame Kyere Addo. To further worsen things for the visitors, Abukari Ibrahim was given his marching orders after picking a second yellow card in the game.

Okwahu Utd managed to hold onto the 1-0 lead to book a place in the semi-finals. WAFA’s hoodoo continues as they were booted out of the competition at the same stage by Medeama last year.
