Acting Chairman of the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), Joe Debrah is asking for education for football fans as a means of curbing violence at the various stadia.
The Division One League has in recent match days witnessed lots of hooliganism leading to the headline sponsor GN Bank deciding to suspend its contract after Coach of Elmina Sharks, Kobina Amissah was attacked in a game against Proud United at the Gyandu Park last Saturday. He became the latest victim of similar alarming acts that have characterized the Division One League especially this season.
Most of these acts of indiscipline by supporters are often said to be reactions to bad officiating but Mr. Debrah believes the fans lacks the knowledge in understanding the laws of the game hence their behavior. He has called on the media to provide the platform for such education to be held.
“The laws of the game is on the internet. Eeverybody can access it but the laws of the game is like reading the Bible, if God doesn’t give you the gift, you will read from Genesis to Revelation but you will not understand”.
He explains to Kapital Sports “You may read the laws of the game but [you may not understand] unless you get interpretation from people who are experts, so we will need to educate the public through radio as we used to do provided the media will give us the platform”.
The Ghana Football Association is expected to have a meeting with GN Bank, the wholly owned Ghanaian financial institution in the coming days for them to reconsider their position.
