Las Palmas angry as Wakaso aggravates injury on Ghana duty

Mubarak Wakaso has been caught up in a club versus-country row after aggravating an injury on international duty.

Spanish side UDS Las Palmas reluctantly released the midfielder for Ghana’s double header games with Mozambique after receiving a surprise invitation from the Ghana FA while he was yet to fully recover from a recent injury at the club.

The invitation came while Wakaso was training away from the Las Palmas first team as part of his 4-week recovery process.

Tied by FIFA regulations, the club could only register a protest of the former Espanyol player in an official announcement on Thursday March 17

“Wakaso will travel to his country on Saturday after the release of UD Las Palmas players as well-stipulated in the regulations of Fifa for international matches.

“The player will take a medical report certifying that he is in his last phase of recovery [from injury] to the Ghana Football Association to assess,” parts of the club’s statement read.

Wakaso joined the Black Stars camp and was subsequently featured in the Ghana starting lineup against Mozambique in Accra. He however pulled out in the second half of the encounter with a thigh problem. He was ruled out of the reverse game in Maputo due to the injury.

Las Palmas are angry at the Ghana FA’s decision to ignore a medical report sent them by going on to use the not-fully recovered Wakaso.

“It is bad that Wakaso did not fully recover and was rushed to action only for him to get injured again. It is not good at all. He has been out of action for so long,” head coach Quique Setien bemoaned.

“In future we have to consider call ups if we deem the player is at risk of aggravating an injury,” he noted.

Wakaso is currently on loan at Las Palmas from Russia’s Rubin Kazan.
