AFCON 2017Q: Evans Mensah replaces Accam in Ghana squad

Coach Avram Grant has handed Inter Allies sensation Evans Mensah a late call to the Black Stars camp for this week’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations double qualifying games against Mozambique.

The left-footed winger has been a hit this season after largely deputizing for Frederick Opoku Yamoah (now with MSK Zilina) in his debut season last term.

Mensah who is in his second season after arriving from the Right to Dreams Academy has featured full time with eye-catching displays in 4 of the five games played in the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League.

The 1998-born, likened to Christian Atsu, has won three man-of-the-match awards and scored against Dreams FC.

Evans Mensah gets his debut national team call as a replacement for Chicago Fire winger David Accam who pulled out of the Ghana squad for the qualifiers with a knee injury.

Mensah becomes the third local player in Grant’s 23-man squad with Samuel Tetteh of WAFA and goalkeeper Richard Ofori of Wa All Stars already in the set-up.

The Black Stars who began preparations with 14 players on Monday now have a full house ahead of Tuesday’s session at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana first hosts Mozambique at 3:30 pm in Accra on Thursday before a return encounter in Maputo on Sunday.
