Lartey thrilled to complete Ajax CT move

It’s been a good year for Ghanaian centre-back Lawrence Lartey, and he hopes it gets better.

The player has finalized his move to Ajax Cape Town, signing a two-year deal with the club. It was reported last week that the AshGold defender had started training with the Urban Warriors.

Terms have now been agreed and the player is thrilled with the move. “It has been good to be part of a club with so many good young players. This is a great club in general and the players here are on a good level.”

Lartey is destined for a place in Ghana’s senior national team, having played key roles in the U17, U20 and U23 setups. “The facilities are the best I’ve experienced so far. South African football has developed a lot; I can see myself developing into a better player here. This is a good step in my career, I am happy to finally sign for Ajax.”

It’s not the first time Lartey has been out of his country to trial, but this time he was confident all will be fruitful.

“I was always positive that the deal would happen,” Lartey says.

“I am very happy to further my career with a club of such a great pedigree. The club and players are very professional and I cannot wait to make my debut as it is a long time coming.”

Ajax CT CEO, Ari Efstathiou, said, “We have been trying to lure Lawrence to join us since 2013 and we are thrilled to have him join Ajax CT. He is a natural leader with fantastic international experience. He is a strong, quick and very intelligent defender and a very valuable addition to the Ajax squad, especially going into our upcoming CAF campaign.”

The 22-year-old’s deal also has a one-year option and after helping AshGold win their first league title in two decades, is ready for an even bigger challenge.

Lartey also skippered his country to a bronze medal at the 2013 U-20 Fifa World Cup.
