GPL Preview: Berekum Chelsea looking to have a taste of the porcupine

It’s match day 4 of the Ghana Premier League and 9th placed Berekum Chelsea will be welcoming Asante Kotoko to the Golden City Park on Sunday.

The Berekum lads have their impressive home record to protect against a Kotoko side who are having a troubled start to the 2015/16 season. Per records, Chelsea have managed only a win in their last six matches against the Kumasi side.

Berekum Chelsea started the season with a defeat to debutants Techiman City before posting a 1-0 home win against WAFA on match day 2. The Blues managed to secure an impressive goalless draw with defending champions Ashgold at the Len Clay Stadium on match day 3, moving their points tally to four (4) out of a possible nine (9).

On the other hand, Coach David Duncan and his charges are under fire after getting only 2 points against WAFA, Medeama and Ashgold.

Kotoko will be going into this game hoping to secure a win to satisfy their supporters although it seemed to be a difficult task. The last time Berekum Chelsea lost a home game was way back in the 2012/13 season against Amidaus Professionals in a match Day 14 fixture.

Last season Kotoko were defeated at the Baba Yara Sports on Match day 22 by 3 goals to nil after they had a 1-1 draw in match day 9 courtesy a goal from Richard Mpong for the away side and Prince Attakora-Gyimah for the Berekum lads.

There could be changes in the offing since Coach Duncan is yet to settle on his regular starting eleven (11) unlike Berekum Chelsea’s Solomon Odwo who could be boosted with the return of Asiwome Fumador back in the starting eleven.

The Berekum side will be relying heavily on star striker Saddick Adams who has the only 2015/16 league season goal for the side against a questionable Kotoko defence who has shipped in 4 goals this season.

For the Procupine Warriors, history will be their only source of motivation as out of a total fourteen (14) matches, Kotoko has 6 wins (14 goals) as against 4 for Berekum Chelsea (13 goals).

Both teams have on 4 occassions shared the spoils and Sunday, soccer loving fans will find out if that number will increase to 5 or Berekum Chelsea will improve on their winning statistics against the porcupine warriors.
