U-23 AfconQ: Ghana-Togo tie moved to December

Ghana’s tie against neighbours Togo in the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifying will now be played in December, Footy-Ghana.com is informed.

The Black Meteors were initially scheduled to host the first leg of the Egypt 2019 first round qualifier on November 17 with the reverse fixture coming off in Lomé three days later.

However, it has now been shifted to December 18 and 22 in Accra and Lomé respectively, per an approved agreement between the two close border countries.

The Normalization for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) initiated the move to have the match rescheduled citing the demands of the country hosting the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking to Footy-Ghana.com, spokesperson for the Normalization Committee, Dan Kwaku Yeboah said the Confederation of African Football (Caf) referred the GFA to their opponents.

“Caf told us they would have no problem in giving us the greenlight if Togo accepts a change of date.

“We (GFA) consulted Togo and they accepted our request by evening proposing the new dates of December 18 for the first leg and the 22nd for the return,” he revealed.

“We have notified Caf of the agreement with Togo so more or less, the Meteors-Togo came is shifted to December,” Kwaku Yeboah also told footy-ghana.com.

The GFA is yet to officially announce a coach for the Black Meteors though media reports claim that Yusif Abubakar has been handed the job. No call-ups have also been made for preparations towards the new date to begin.

Meanwhile, Togo opened camp last week to begin preparations for the December tie. They intend to host North African giants Morocco in an international friendly early next week.

The winner of the Ghana-Togo tie will meet Gabon in the second round of the qualifiers scheduled for March 18 to 26, 2019.
