Cameroon hammer Zambia 7-0 in final pre-AWCON friendly

Cameroon, Monday evening, sent strong signals to their 2018 Women’s Afcon opponents with a 7-0 thrashing of Zambia in a final preparatory game for both sides ahead of the tournament in Ghana.

The two countries have pitched camp in neighbouring Ivory Coast over the past week and decided to wrap up their preparations with the friendly at the National Technical Center in Bingerville, Abidjan.

The match was the third time the two sides were clashing this year having played each other at the Cosafa Women Championship in September. Zambia won 1-0 at the group stage while Cameroon won by same margin in the semifinals.

However, this time Les Lionnes Indomitables proved too strong for the Copper Queens with a goal from Ngock Yango with the trio of Aboudi Onguene, Ajara Njoya and Michaëla Abam taking turns to bag a brace each.

The defeat is Zambia’s first in their preparations for the Afcon after impressively coming back from two goals down to beat Ghana 3-2.

Cameroon, the Women’s Afcon runner-ups for a record four times, are in Group A with Mali, Algeria and Ghana.

Coach Joseph Ndocko’s side face the Malians on November 17, Algeria on the 20th and the tournament hosts three days later at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Cameroon’s final squad of 21 for the 11th Women’s Afcon, Ghana 2018, is dominated by 14 members of the squad that finished second behind Nigeria at the last edition on home soil.

Meanwhile, Zambia are housed in Group B alongside Nigeria, South Africa and Equatorial Guinea. They kick off their campaign on November 18 against Equatorial Guinea and face defending champions Nigeria three days later in Cape Coast. Zambia will travel with South Africa to Accra to complete their group games on November 24.

Footy-Ghana.com has confirmed that Zambia will fly out of Ivory Coast to Ghana for the Women’s Afcon late Tuesday afternoon.
