Revealed: $45,000 for GFA/StarTimes Gala participants

The Ghana FA has communicated the prize money pool for the Gala competition to the various “Premier League and some selected Division One clubs”, Footy-Ghana.com can confirm.

Last week, the GFA officially announced the return of the off-season knockout competition which had been abandoned for close to 18 years.

It was last held in 2005 and won by Asante Kotoko.

The 16-team competition, which now has StarTimes as broadcast rights holders, nearly returned in January last year ahead of the 2016/17 season but was forced to be called off at the last minute following agitations by some Ghana Premier League clubs and the Ghana League Clubs Association (Ghalca) over appearance fee.

The Nduom Stadium in Elmina has been earmarked to host the gala on February 3 and 4.

In the letter chanced upon by Footy-Ghana.com, the GFA said interested clubs have Friday January 5 to confirm their participation.

Footy-Ghana can reveal that a total of $45,000 will be purely awarded to the 16 participating teams according to how they finish in the two-day competition.

Once confirmed to participate, a club will be guaranteed an appearance fee of $2,500. Progressing through to the last four will have each club gain a further $500.

Runners-up in the final can console themselves with a $1,000 prize while eventual winners will pocket $2,000.

Below is the entire breakdown of prize money pool for the GFA/StarTimes Gala competition:

Appearance fee – $2,500 per club – (Totaling $40,000)

Last 4 teams – $500 each – (Totaling $2,000)

Runner-up – $1,000

Winner – $2,000
