Marcus McGuane ditches Arsenal for Barcelona

Spanish giants FC Barcelona have snapped up young midfielder, of mixed Ghanaian and English parentage, Marcus McGuane from Arsenal.

The defensive midfielder, who turns 19 in February, previously bore the surname Agyei-Tabi before changing it to McGuane in January 2016, a little over a month after also switching allegiance from Ireland to England.

He joined the Arsenal ranks at the age of five and graduated from the club’s academy but turned down a deal to stay with the Gunners in favor of a switch to the La Liga side.

Barcelona, on Tuesday, announced signing Marcus McGuane for an undisclosed fee.

He would initially join up with the Barcelona B squad and holds an option to extend his contract, which has a buy-out clause set at £22.5m.

A Barcelona statement read: ‘McGuane’s deal will keep him at Barca for three seasons, plus two option years. The buy-out clause has been set at E25m.’

Marcus McGuane made two appearances for Arsenal’s first team in the Europa League this season against Red Star Belgrade and BATE Borisov.
