One goal was enough for Hearts of Oak to start their Ghalca G8 campaign on a winning note on Saturday.
Winger Isaac Mensah notched the goal from close range in the 28th minute, heading home a cross from Cosmos Dauda as the Phobians beat Karela United 1-0 in a Group B opener at the Cape Coast Stadium.
Hearts had many scoring chances going begging with Dauda the biggest culprit.
Karela, on the other hand, showed promise with Osei Baffour leading most of their attacking threats.
The Ghana Premier League newbies did everything possible to get back on level terms especially in the second half but Hearts kept their composure and made plays when they needed to until referee Kennedy Padi’s final whistle.
Karela United left-back Ibrahim Moro was adjudged man-of-the-match.
