Morocco rejects request to play Black Stars in friendly

Ghana’s preparations for the Afcon could be disrupted as plans to play two friendlies with some African countries camping in the UAE appear to be slipping away.

GFA President Kwasi Nyantakyi on Monday had announced plans for the Stars to play two games on the 7th and 10th with yet-to-be-confirmed opponents before leaving for Gabon three days later.

A team offical has told footy-ghana.com that the GFA settled on Morocco as potential opponents after discovering the North Africans were also staying in the same hotel as the Black Stars in the UAE.

However, the North Africans, coached by former Black Stars physical trainer Herve Renard, have rejected a request to play the Black Stars in a test game. The Moroccans are not comfortable with the short notice and have also indicated their own camping plans do not include a friendly with the Black Stars.

This is a major setback for the Black Stars team as head coach Avram Grant is desperately in need of a test match to assess his squad before the tournament kicks off in 8 days time.

The Black Stars are chasing a first Africa Cup of Nations title for the first time since 1982 and are placed in a difficult group that also includes Egypt, Mali and Uganda.
