Kotoko’s coach justifies Michael Akuffo’s recall

Coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Michael Osei has justified his turn around to ask Michael Akuffo to be with the club after initially asking him to look elsewhere.

Footy-Ghana in October reported that Asante Kotoko had opted to dispense with the services of the experienced midfielder Michael Akuffo.

The defensive midfielder joined the porcupine warriors in December 2010 and enjoyed a successful debut season where the side won the Ghana Premier League title under coach Maxwell Konadu, Akuffo also helped the side to keep the title for three straight seasons.

The 30-year-old pushed for a loan spell away from the club last season following an offer from Lebanese side Al Ansar. He joined the Lebanese giants in August 2015 but his stay was short-lived by a training grounds injury to his knee in January this year.

Akuffo re-joined Kotoko for training on the first day of the resumption of pre-season at the team’s training grounds at Adako Jachie but Kotoko asked him to look elsewhere.

However the club has made a u-turn indicating they would want the services of the former Feyenoord Academy (now WAFA SC) graduate.

According to Michael Osei, a desire for a defensive midfielder to provide competition for both Sarfo Gyamfi and Emmanuel Gyamfi necessitated the recall.

“I think that Akuffo’s situation because I needed a holding midfielder he crossed my mind and so I decided to recall him so I can assess him well because he’s a former Kotoko player and we all know the qualities she possesses.”

He added, “I took the earlier decision of dispensing him off because of the injury he had earlier this year and so I thought he couldn’t play but now I want to see if he can help us and even if he can’t help us now, I’m sure he can do that in the future for the good of the club”.

Meanwhile the club is getting set to finalise deals with Isaac Quansah, Prince Acquah and Idan Conney while former Hearts of Oak player Ollenu Ashitey has began training with the Kotoko ahead of the season.
