AWCON 2016: Queens face Nigeria in Group B

The Black Queens of Ghana have been drawn to face old rivals Nigeria in the group phase of this year’s CAF Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) to be hosted by Cameroon.

The senior female national team is housed in Group B of the continental showpiece scheduled for November 19 to December 3, 2016.

Coach Yusif Basigi’s girls will look forward to upsetting nine-time champions Nigeria while Mali, consistent performers on the continent, and newbies Kenya, are all in contention for a semifinal ticket from the group.

Hosts Cameroon, Egypt and the duo of South Africa and Zimbabwe, who represented Africa at the 2016 Rio Olympics have been placed in Group A.

The draw for the 10th edition was held at the Palais de Sports in Yaoundé on Sunday.

The official mascot and tournament hymn were also unveiled at the ceremony.

“Lily” is the name for the mascot while “homage to the footballers” is the official anthem for this year’s competition. It was performed by Charlotte Dipanda & Richard King.
