MTN FA Cup: Hearts get KOed, Kotoko advance to R16

Ghana’s biggest clubs and record FA Cup winners Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko suffered contrasting fortunes in their Round of 32 trips of the MTN sponsored competition on Saturday.

Hearts of Oak emerged the villains against Division One side Samartex after playing out a barren stalemate in regulation time.

The game went straight into penalty shootouts with the home side coming out 4-2 victors. Hearts goalie Mutawakilu Seidu saved the first kick of Samartex but Vincent Atingah and Paul Acquah also failed to convert their kicks for the Phobians.

After enduring a close to 12-hour roadtrip to Tumu in the Sisala West District, arch-rivals Asante Kotoko managed to beat hosts Real 24Hours FC 2-0 to book their place in the last 16. Striker Obed Owusu scored both goals in each half for the 2015 MTN FA Cup finalists.

Also at Prampram on Saturday, Liberty Professionals came back with a late Bernard Arthur equalizer before sailing through 7-6 on penalties against Pure Joy FC. The Division One side had taken the lead through Peter Teye’s 5th minute penalty.

In other games True Democracy pipped Accra Youth by a lone goal while Storm Academy also edged out Kotoku Royals by the same margin.

Martin Antwi’s only goal at the Sogakope Park earned WAFA SC a 1-0 victory over a defensive minded Karela FC on Friday.

Kumasi-based first Division side Asokwa Deportivo also eliminated league champions AshantiGold 4-2 on penalties at the Baba Yata Stadium.

Other Round of 32 games are scheduled for Sunday April 17.
